Smolderfang bounded valiantly over the wide expanse of Windclan's territory, breathing deeply as he inhaled the fresh air that drifted across the rolling hills and grassy moors. He glanced behind him, finally managing to find his apprentice a ways behind. He had insisted to Foxpaw that he take him out for a rabbit-catching session, a great skill to possess. Rabbits were a filling and nutritious food source, but they were also dangerous. Smolderfang himself had heard of cats that were dimwitted enough to attack a rabbit from the front, having their eyes scratched out instead of a good catch.
Keep your legs moving swiftly, Foxpaw, or else you'll lose all your prey before we even begin." Smolderfang enjoyed teaching his apprentice, although he had to admit that the little runt could be a hassle on the tom's patience now and again, even so he kept cool. That's just how Smolderfang did things. He would break the apprentice in eventually, and turn him into the great warrior he dreamed of many nights in the past. It was time that Windclan, his clan started shaping up, even if Starclan was no longer there to guide them.

Life seemed to be a game for the young apprentice. No matter where he went, it seemed as if there was always something lying in wait, waiting for him to devise a terrible trap for an unsuspecting cat. That trap being roaches and unsuspecting cat being Smolderfang. The old tom had no vision of fun. In fact, Foxpaw was sure such a word of happiness was absent in the warrior's vocabulary. But he'd make Smolderfang see the light one day. That day just wasn't today. Unfortunately, while Foxpaw predicted battle training today and laid a trap of roaches beneath a pile of grass in their usual training spot, the old coot made a schedule change at the last minute. It was as if he was psychic, that he knew the prank would be there.
Foxpaw's ears could hear, but it was as if what he said was in a total different language. He seemed to go on and on, as if he had the intention of boring the apprentice to death. "C'mon, Smolderfang, why can't we do battle training?" He whined, assuming the position his mentor ordered him to do. Foxpaw wasn't about to let a perfectly good prank go to waste like this. Although, by now, the bugs must've escaped the grass pile.

The warrior smirked at his apprentice's impatient behavior, knowing just how eager he was to get to battle training. They always were. Everyone knew that fighting was first on the priority list of every young apprentice, and even Smolderfang himself had been quite unsatisfied whenever his mentor had discouraged battle training so early in his apprenticeship. "I know you want to train to be a fighter, but there is so much more to being a warrior than just sinking your claws into the pelts of your enemies. You need to know how to catch for your clan as well. You need discipline and skills. Besides, some of the techniques I'm about to show you may come in handy in a fight."
Smolderfang scanned the plains and finally saw a bushy white tail peaking out from behind a nearby bush. "Catch that rabbit," he motioned with his head to where the morsel lingered.

Foxpaw rolled his eyes in both impatience and disrespect. He bounced on his paws lightly, waiting for his mentor to stop talking so that they could start. But he began to say some interesting things, actually.
"I know you want to train to be a fighter, but there is so much more to being a warrior than just sinking your claws into the pelts of your enemies. You need to know how to catch for your clan as well. You need discipline and skills. Besides, some of the techniques I'm about to show you may come in handy in a fight."
Then again, maybe it wasn't so interesting. Foxpaw began to bounce again, tail flicking in irritation.
"Yeah, but who really cares about that stuff, Smolderfang? I mean, I thought being a warrior was all about strength and loyalty to the Clan, and being able to defend them, not running around doin' chores!" The last statement came out as a disappointment, as if a little kit's dreams had been squashed by a nasty old elder.
"Catch that rabbit," He heard his mentor's command, and stayed put. He really didn't want to, but began to crouch slowly and silently.

Smolderfang watched his apprentice's movement carefully, pinpointing the exact moment he would need to strike to catch the rabbit. "That's it, feel the earth shift between your paws so you don't make as much noise."
He only nagged because he had been quite unsteady on his feet when he had started training. Smolderfang, then Smolderpaw, often bumped into rocks and tripped on his own paws while hunting for rabbits. He didn't want Foxpaw to suffer the same disappointment. It had been absolutely humiliating for Smolderpaw, and besides, the sooner Foxpaw mastered the art of hunting the sooner they could move on to the type of training Foxpaw desired most.
Smolderfang was quite looking forward to it as well. He did love a good tussle.
"Quick! Get it now," he whispered fiercely as Foxpaw made just a tad too much noise and the rabbit began to scamper away.
