They baked and boiled in the heat, choking rabbits from their holes and encouraging them to fly in search of cooler settlement. It was in one of these burrows a young bunny bolted forward. He was small and vulnerable, but unafraid, as most youth are. However, and most unusual, he ran right into the paws of a waiting apprentice. She simply smiled.
"That is no place for a bunny to be running." The startled rabbit looked up at her with big, terrified eyes. She nudged him away, and he ran off in perplexed fright. Laughing, Angelpaw watched him flee. She was no hunter, and certainly she was not meant to hurt an innocent creature. She never did bother with anything that did not involve her strict duties as the apprentice of a Medicine Cat. Collecting herbs in the Greenleaf heat was her sole purpose at the time.
Angelpaw stood up, stretching, and making her way up and down the hills, far from the burrows she'd been watching. She had only recently learned the skill of becoming invisible to the world. It was her gift. She could disappear for a spell, sitting where she was, and become a wallflower that nothing seemed to notice. She was always there, of course, but her gift of becoming something unimportant was unique to her, and allowed her to do things such as sit in front of a burrow and be a speed bump for rabbits.
Then without warning, she burst into a run. Angelpaw was running faster than one might think possible. Her legs were flying across the starry sphere, and she stopped to catch her breath. She could almost taste it, now. It was drawing ever-nearer. Her paws reached forward, stretching but finding only air. It had to be there. She could sense it's present growing closer, closer. So much closer... She stopped in her tracks, her paws skittering and tumbling to catch themselves. Gasping, she set her rear down right where it was, which brought herself to a dead halt.
Looking around, Angelpaw let out a soft sigh. She began to lick her paw as if nothing had happened. Sometimes, she was quite easily spooked. Her tentative nature made her jumpy at best, and when she felt that she had to run, she would do so. There was a darkness around her at all times, and though she tried her best to see it and avoid it, sometimes it crept up on her fast. Luckily, it was long gone now. Hoping no one had seen her outburst, but merely because she did not feel like explaining it to a cat who lacked understanding, she began to wait for something to happen. At times like this, something usually did.

The orange, darting ears atop his head ticked in the wind, irritated at how strong it seemed to be today. The down wind always seemed to give away his crouching position to his prey, and they end up scampering off. That is what seemed to have happened this time, as the rabbit he was stalking mysteriously hopped away, leaving him dumbfounded and hungry. Oh, who was he kidding? He sucked at hunting. Smolderfang never directly told him so, but he knew deep inside that his mentor was disappointed. It scared him that, if he didn't get the hang of this, he'd never become a warrior.
Like a beacon from StarClan, another rabbit hopped into his view, completely oblivious to his presence. He took the opportunity to crouch down, tail on the ground, and waited for the right moment. It twinkled its nose, and Foxpaw was fairly certain it already knew he was there. But the wind wasn't facing his direction, so there was no way. He took a few paw steps forward, and the rabbit made no sudden movements. Okay, this wasn't so hard. In fact, it was easy. All he had to do now was poun--
And, there goes the rabbit. With the sudden change of wind, it pointed to where he was, and the rabbit smelled him immediately. Foxpaw lifted up, darting towards the rabbit with incredible speed, determined not to let this one get away. It didn't go too far, though, before Foxpaw leaped and spread his claws, ready to take it down. However, he miscalculated the jump, and crashed into a nearby cat, smacking his head on the grassland ground and being a bit woozy for a few minutes.
"Oh... mousebrain...." He moaned, rubbing his head as best he could with his paw. "Hey, watch where you're going!" Foxpaw growled at the cat whose name he did not know, before recognizing it to be Angelpaw. "Oh, hey.... sorry... 'bout that."

The wind was not on his side today at all. He barreled forward after what appeared to be a young rabbit, but was not gaining much ground. She stood up, stretching and taking two steps to the right and setting herself down, aiming her shoulder at the tom. He leaped up over the crest of a hill and came straight down on top of her as the startled rabbit shot past her. The tangle of cats split quickly, and she sat up without so much as a hint of surprise.
Angelpaw smiled, looking Foxpaw up and down with a sort of mysteriously all-knowing grin. It was her usual sly smirk, one that adorned her face when she was feeling a swell of cleverness about her. It didn't last long, though. Instead, she sat bak up and her face became a lot more serious looking. This time it seemed harsh and business-like, which was her normal sort of know-it-all look.
"I wondered who might be crashing in to see me. I do have a habit of popping up places I'm not expected."
Angelpaw could tell that Foxpaw, even though he had recognized her, had a sort of miffed air to him. She looked off in the distance, following the path that the rabbit had taken and vanished. The she-cat knew that she had probably wrecked the tom's pride.
"If you're really wanting a rabbit, there's a burrow around here with an older one sleeping away the day. He never goes far from his burrow. The foolish part is his second exit is extremely close to the entrance, so if you buried it in, he'd be forced to come out and right into yours paws."
Of course, that was merely a suggestion. Angelpaw had a way of thinking things over at times like this, and sometimes she was rewarded with knowledge outside her realm of focus to help those in need. They were particularly fond of Foxpaw today, it seemed, for they were excited in speaking.
"Oh, and use the wind to your advantage. Rabbits run zig-zag, so if you follow along the side and curve over to where they're heading, half the time you can cut them off."
Her blurbs of advice ending, she lost her emotionless expression and became a lot friendlier.
"Anyway, how goes the hunting?" Zerotail
[/font][/blockquote][/blockquote] It was a perfect day to explore. These moorlands had a kind of undefinable mystery and charm to them that just stirred that sleeping traveler within him, and he was always eager to dash out onto the sprawling green world and just have a look around. Sometimes, he thought that younger cats, who were so caught up in hunting or fighting, never stopped to just look at the sky or smell the heather, or listen to the faraway birdsong that were the heralds of greenleaf. Of course, Zerotail smiled softly at these thoughts and said to himself, "Wow, I sound like an old cat already."
Content with the world and this period of peace, Zerotail went on a leisurely stroll around the borders, following the scent trails and markers until he found where the corner of the territory was and turned accordingly. The occasional rabbit skipped through the fields in his peripheral vision but he was happy now, and so stifled his hunter's instinct and continued with his walk. For the sake of his privacy, he walked in a lazy serpentine pattern, changing direction according to the shifting wind. Man, was it volatile today. He felt a bit sorry for any apprentices or hunters that were out hunting today. Of course, he would be perfectly capable of tracking something down but as earlier, he didn't feel like hunting right now.
He stopped briefly when one of the shifts in wind brought him the scents of two apprentices: Angelpaw and Foxpaw, and he briefly pondered bypassing them and continuing with his walk. Shaking his head and deciding he ought to go see what they were doing, he changed direction, his swaying gait forgotten, and headed for the apprentices. When they came into view, he tilted his head slightly, ever conscious of his bobtail but descended the hillock he was on towards them.
"Hello. Angelpaw and Foxpaw, right?" he asked, even though the answer was obvious. He was just being polite, "Whatcha doing?"
